Kevin C. Almeroth - Assistant Professor, UC Santa Barbara
 
 


Kevin C. AlmerothKevin C. Almeroth earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1997. He is currently an assistant professor at the University of California in Santa Barbara where his main research interests include computer networks and protocols, multicast communication, large-scale multimedia systems, and performance evaluation. Research in these areas is lead by Professor Almeroth and is housed in the Networking and Multimedia Systems Lab (NMSL). Within the UCSB community Professor Almeroth is involved in the Media Arts and Technology Program (MATP) -- a Master's Degree program combining the engineering and artistic disciplines; the Center for Information Technology and Society (CITS) -- a Center dedicated to studying the impact of the Internet on society; the Digital Media Innovation (DiMI) -- a matching grant program for multimedia research, and the high speed California Research and Education Network (CalREN-2) -- California's version of the Next Generation Internet. Outside of UCSB, Dr. Almeroth is on the Editorial Board of IEEE Network, has served as tutorial chair for various conferences (ICNP 1999 and ACM MM 2000), and has been on the program committees of several conferences (ICNP 1999, ICNP 2000, and NGC 1999). Dr. Almeroth is currently serving as the chair of the Internet2 Working Group on Multicast, and is a member of the IETF Multicast Directorate (MADDOGS). He has been a member of both the ACM and IEEE since 1993.
 

Larry Barels - Investor

 
Larry BarelsLarry Barels was founder and chief executive officer of Wavefront Technologies, a leading innovator of graphics software for film, interactive multimedia, industrial design and visualization markets. In 1994, Wavefront became a Nasdaq public company and was acquired by Silicon Graphics, Inc. in 1995. Subsequently, Barels was the chairman of the board of privately owned Software.com, a leader in carrier-scale messaging products, where he was instrumental in attracting investments from corporate partners AT&T and CISCO. Currently, he is a principal of Pacific Capital Resources and an advisor to Vantage Point Venture Partners, through which he structures and arranges venture and leveraged mezzanine capital for companies with high growth potential. He is also the Chairman of the Board of Driveway Corporation. Barels has been a frequent speaker on capital formation and other issues facing high growth companies. He is an active member of the National Association of Corporate Directors and has been the subject of feature articles in publications including Forbes, Time, Venture, Entrepreneur and The Wall Street Journal.

 

Dr. Daniel Blumenthal

 
Dr. Daniel BlumenthalDr. Daniel Blumenthal is Senior Systems Architect and Co-Founder of Calient Networks, where he focuses on advanced optical networking. He is also an associate professor of electrical engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and is a leader in the field of optical switching systems, earning many prestigious awards such as the 1999 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. Prior to his seven years as an associate professor, he held engineering positions at StorageTek and Sievers Research, Inc., and numerous engineering research positions at Columbia University and the universities of Colorado and Pennsylvania. He has authored a number of papers in the optical networking field, such as MOSAIC: A Multiwavelength Optical Subcarrier Multiplexed Controlled Network and OPERA: An Optical Packet Experimental Routing Architecture with Label Swapping Capability. Dr. Blumenthal received his PhD in electrical engineering from the University of Colorado, an MS in electrical engineering from Columbia University and a BS in electrical engineering from the University of Rochester.

 

Trevor Fetter

Trevor FetterTrevor Fetter serves as president and chief executive officer of Tenet Healthcare Corporation, one of the nation's largest hospital companies with 112 hospitals in 16 states. He also serves on the company's board of directors. Fetter is a key member of Tenet's new executive management team that is pursuing a new strategic direction for the company.

Fetter, 43, joined Tenet in 1995.  He served as Tenet's executive vice president and then chief financial officer and chief corporate officer in the Office of the President.  In these roles, he was responsible for the company's corporate functions, including the areas of finance, law, information systems, human resources, communication and administration, and was actively involved in the areas of future strategic initiatives, acquisitions and new ventures.

Fetter left Tenet in February 2000 to serve as chairman and chief executive officer of Broadlane, Inc., a leading provider of cost management services to hospitals founded by Tenet and several other major health care providers.  He returned to Tenet in November 2002 as president and was named acting CEO in May 2003.  He continues to serve as chairman of Broadlane.

Prior to joining Tenet in 1995, Trevor served as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Inc., where he had a broad range of corporate and operating responsibilities. In addition to managing MGM's financial organization, he oversaw its licensing and merchandising operations and served on the Operating Board of the company s international distribution partnership. Before joining MGM in 1988, Mr. Fetter worked in the investment banking division of Merrill Lynch Capital Markets, where he concentrated on corporate finance and advisory services for the entertainment and health care industries. Trevor holds an MBA degree from Harvard Business School and a bachelor's degree in economics from Stanford University.
 

 
Dr. R. Stockton Gaines - Investor

Dr. R. Stockton GainesDr. R. Stockton Gaines has had a distinguished 43 year career in research, industry and investments. Until 1995, he directed a research program at the Information Sciences Institute of USC, addressing issues in parallel computing system architectures, software operating systems and support. He managed the FAST Electronic Broker project, a successful demonstration of electronic commerce using a novel approach to brokered purchasing using E-Mail. His work in industry has included consulting on general corporate issues, strategic planning, and management of specific hardware and software projects for numerous high technology companies such as IBM, EMC, Storage Technology, Silicon Graphics, Honeywell, Unisys, Olivetti, Control Data, Philips Data Systems, Northrop among many others. He has also consulted to a number of venture capital companies including Paragon Venture Partners and Brentwood Associates.

Dr. Gaines is a co-founder, Director and currently a senior executive of Acorn Technologies, Inc., a Pacific Palisades based intellectual property company which develops, owns and licenses technology. Dr. Gaines holds a B.S. in Engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Princeton University.
 

Allen Gersho

Allen GershoAllen Gersho is a wireless visioneer with the Digital Media Division of Microsoft Corporation and a research professor at UC Santa Barbara (UCSB). His research area at UCSB is multimedia signal compression. He holds patents in various aspects of compression and signal processing. He is co-author with R.M. Gray of the book, Vector Quantization and Signal Compression, Kluwer Academic Publishers, 1992, and co-editor of two books on speech coding. He served as a member of the Board of Governors of the IEEE Communications Society and has been a member of various IEEE technical, editorial, award, and conference management committees. He received his B.S. from MIT in 1960 and Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1963. He was at Bell Laboratories from 1963 to 1980, and was Professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering from 1980 to 1998 and CEO of SignalCom, Inc. from 1996 to 2000. Prior business experience includes technology licensing and expert witness consulting.

He received NASA "Tech Brief" awards for technical innovation in 1987, 1988, and 1992. In 1980, he was co-recipient of the Guillemin-Cauer Prize Paper Award from the Circuits and Systems Society. In 1981, he became a Fellow of the IEEE. He received the Donald McClennan Meritorious Service Award from the IEEE Communications Society in 1983, and in 1984 he was awarded an IEEE Centennial Medal. In 1992, he was co-recipient of the 1992 Video Technology Transactions Best Paper Award from the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society. In 1999, he was co-recipient of the Ericsson-Nokia Best Paper Award at the IEEE Workshop in Speech Coding. In 2000, he was awarded an IEEE Third Millennium Medal.
 

 
 

David Goldmuntz - Investor

David GoldmuntzDavid Goldmuntz moved to Santa Barbara after working for The Union Bank of Switzerland in London as Managing Director responsible for institutional customer equity trading for Europe, specializing in cash equity markets, listed derivative markets and large block trades.

His previous experience includes fourteen years at Salomon Brothers in New York and London where he rose to Managing Director in the Equities Department. He holds an MBA from New York University Graduate School of Business Administration and a BA from Hamilton College.

Dr. Martin Moskovits

Dr. Martin MoskovitsMartin Moskovits, Dean of Science and Professor of Physical Chemistry at UC Santa Barbara, was educated at the University of Toronto (BSc Physics and Chemistry, 1965, PhD Chemical Physics, 1971). From 1993-1999 he was Chair of the Department of Chemistry. He is currently Fellow of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research and Director of its Nanoelectronics Program. Professor Moskovits has authored or co-authored over 200 technical papers, edited or co-edited 3 books and holds 10 patents. Over 60 graduate students and postdoctorals completed their studies under his supervision. These individuals are currently employed in industry, government and academia. Additionally, he hosted several international scientists as sabbatical guest in his laboratory.

He has received over 200 invitations to speak at international conferences and meetings. Martin Moskovits has served a number of administrative functions and on numerous committees including, membership of the Governing Council of the University of Toronto and member of its Business Board, service as Chair of NSERC’s Analytical and Physical grants selection committee, member of the Canada Council Killam Prize and Fellowship selection committee, the John C. Polanyi Chair Inauguration committee which brought 11 Nobel Laureates to Canada, several University advisory committees and many international conference steering committees. He has served as Board Member of the Ontario Laser and Lightwave Research Centre and the Centres of Excellence for Molecular and Interfacial Dynamics. He is a member of the Technical Advisory Board of the Canadian Science and Technology Growth Fund. He participated in several Science Policy Forums and edited "Science and Society: The John C. Polanyi Nobel Laureates Lectures", M. Moskovits, ed. (Anansi, Toronto, 1995).

Professor Moskovits is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, winner of the 1993 Gerhard Herzberg Award of the Spectroscopy Society of Canada, the 1993 Royal Society of Chemistry (London) award in Surface and Colloid Science, Killam Fellow (1989-91), Guggenheim Fellow, Department of Chemistry, UC, Berkeley, 1986-87, the 1995 400th Anniversary Johannes Marcus Marci Medal of the Czech Spectroscopy Society, 1999 winner of the CSC EWR Steacie Award, Fellow of Massey College, member of the editorial board of the Journal of Chemical Physics, member of the Advisory Board of NRC’s Steacie Institute for Molecular Sciences, member of the Board of Directors of Canadian Overseas International College in Hong Kong and member of the Research Corporation’s Award Program Advisory Committee.


David Newton - Professor of Entrepreneurial Finance

David NewtonDavid Newton is Professor of Entrepreneurial Finance and has been the head of the entrepreneurship program at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California since 1990. Prior to that he taught for five years in the MBA program at Pepperdine University in Los Angeles, and one year at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. He worked for two years in investment banking in Boston in the early '80's before entering academia, and remains an active consultant in the areas of small firm financial strategy, venture capital, IPO's, and firm valuation to more than 100 fast-growth entrepreneurial firms since 1984. He has a BSBA, and MBA in finance, and a DBA in entrepreneurial finance.

He is the founder and managing director of the Westmont Small Business Barometer on California's Silicon Beach technology corridor, past Chief Economist to Hispanic Business magazine, and former member of the Editorial Review Board for the Journal of Small Business Strategy. His is also Contributing Editor on Growth Capital for Industry Week Growing Companies magazine and Contributing Editor on Business Financing for Entrepreneur.com (the Entrepreneur magazine on-line small firm consulting site) and the on-line expert moderator on Small-Cap Investing for eraider.com (Wall Street's first and only publicly-traded small-cap take-over fund). Mike Nicassio - Investor

Mike NicassioMike has had an extensive career in broadcasting and advertising spanning 25 years. Mike spent 15 years with Eastman Radio, one of the premier radio representative companies in the nation. The last 10 years were spent in New York as Executive Vice President where Mike had the responsibility for the sales operation of 14 offices and 50 sales people. During his career with Eastman Radio, Mike was elected to the Board of Directors and received numerous awards including Manager of the Year. Mike founded Channel Islands Broadcasting where he served as President/General Manager of radio stations 1340 KIST/Magic 106.3. Even though the stations were purchased as "turnarounds" within 1 full year of operation Magic 106.3 became the #1 arbitron rated station in the Santa Barbara market. Mike received a BA degree/cum laude in Telecommunications from the University of Southern California.
 

Robert L. Skinner - Executive Vice President, Towbes Group, Inc.

Robert L. SkinnerRobert L. Skinner joined the Towbes Group, Inc., a Santa Barbara based Real Estate Development and Property Management company, as Vice President and General Counsel in 1997. He was promoted to Executive Vice President in 1999, and is currently involved in all aspects of the company’s business. Additionally, he serves on the Board of Directors of Montecito Bank & Trust and is a member of the Bank’s Asset & Liability, Executive and Venture Lending committees. In 1998, Robert was also named as the Bank’s General Counsel and has recently become a managing member of Agility Capital, LLC, a venture-debt fund, which is currently in the process of raising investment capital.

Prior to joining The Towbes Group and the Bank, Robert spent seven years with the international law firm of White & Case in Los Angeles and in New York. His legal expertise covers complex business litigation, and construction and real estate law. Robert is a graduate of the University of Southern California with a BS in Business Administration and a Juris Doctorate. Most recently, he was appointed to the USC Law School Board of Councilors .
 

Jason Spievak - Vice President, Business Development, CallWave, Inc

Jason SpievakJason Spievak is the Vice President of Business Development at CallWave, Inc., an internet-enhanced call management software and service provider based in Santa Barbara, CA, where he is responsible for identifying and executing on strategic partnerships for the company. Prior to joining CallWave, Jason was the Senior Vice President of Investments at the Santa Barbara Technology Group, LLC, where he was responsible for identifying early-stage investment opportunities, overseeing the evaluation and due diligence on all potential investments, and leading the investment committee in the final selection of new ventures. Prior to joining SBTG, Jason was a Vice President in the technology mergers and acquisitions group in Broadview Associates' Silicon Valley office, where he was a member of the firm's eMedia, Web Services and eBusiness Software global market groups. At Broadview, he specialized in eCommerce software and services, network infrastructure and consumer Web services transactions. Before joining Broadview, Jason was a product manager for Netopia, a developer of Internet/Intranet products and was a product manager for Nextel Communications' wireless data division. Jason earned his MBA from the JL Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University, his BA from the University of California, Santa Barbara and holds NASD Series 7 and Series 63 licenses. .
 

Monette Stephens

Monette StephensMonette has 15 years of experience in network and system design and architecture. She is a founding member of Atlas Consulting, LLC which develops early-stage high technology companies. Her focus is on market and technical strategy, development and commercialization of technology, and funding. Working as a organizational and technical lead, she builds development teams and evaluates software and systems for investment, litigation, acquisition, and efficiency. Monette's varied experience spans fault-tolerant and reliable distributed systems, network infrastructure software, real-time embedded systems, and tools and applications for the Internet. She managed software development at Software.com, ran technology at WebInsight and was a consultant with Sandpiper Networks and Ericsson. She has also been an adjunct faculty member at from the University of California, at Santa Barbara where she lectures on operating systems, data structures and algorithms, programming languages and numerical methods. Monette currently serves on several advisory boards and is part of the executive team for Incremental Images.
 

Ed Stonefelt - Senior Vice President, Santa Barbara Bank & Trust

Ed StonefeltEd Stonefelt is the Senior Vice President in the Retail Lending and Leasing Division at Santa Barbara Bank & Trust where he is responsible for small business lending, consumer direct, consumer indirect, residential real estate and leasing. Previous to heading up the Retail Lending and Leasing Division he was the Bank’s Vice President and Chief Accounting officer. Prior positions include Vice President and Chief Accounting Officer at CTL Credit, Inc. (a consumer finance company with a focus in the area of indirect auto, leasing and home equity lending), Principal of Stonefelt Financial Consulting (provides business and financial management consulting services primarily to medium and small companies), Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for County Bank and Vice President/Controller at Santa Barbara Savings and Loan.

Ed received a Certified Management Accountant (CMA) from the Institute of Management Accountants, a BA in Business Economics and Accounting from Chapman College and holds a California Real Estate License.
 

Matthew Tirrell - Dean of the College of Engineering, UC Santa Barbara

Matthew TirrellMatthew Tirrell is currently the Dean of the College of Engineering at UC Santa Barbara. He holds the Richard A. Auhll Professorship and serves as a faculty member in Chemical Engineering. A member of the National Academy of Engineering, Tirrell's current research focuses on polymer interfaces and transport properties of materials used in applications from coatings and adhesion to lubrication and bioengineering. He is also working in collaboration with colleagues in medicine and engineering on the design of biomaterials for applications in the area of human health.

Before coming to UCSB Matt Tirrell was a Professor of Chemical Engineering and Material Science at the University of Minnesota for over 25 years where he has served as the Shell Distinguished Chair in Chemical Engineering, the E. Bakken Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Director of the Biomedical Engineering Institute, and head of the department since 1995. In the ranking of doctoral programs by the National Research Council in 1995, his chemical engineering department was ranked #1 nationally.

Matthew received his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Northwestern University and Ph.D. Polymer Science and Engineering from the University of Massachusetts.
 

Charles Will

Charles WillsCharles Will is currently Vice President of International Sales for Force10 Networks, a Silicon Valley based equipment manufacturer of 10 Gigabit Ethernet products. Previously, he served a Vice President of Asia Pacific Operations for Juniper Networks, a leading provider of purpose-built systems that meet the scalability, performance, density, and compatibility requirements of rapidly evolving, optically-enabled IP networks. Charles has over 20 years in the communications industry. He started his career with AT&T and has held executive sales positions with Cisco Systems and Stratacom Corporation.

Andy Winchester - Investor

Andy WinchesterAndy Winchester is currently a consultant and advisor to investors in the areas of asset management, credit, and risk management strategies. He also works with companies on business strategy; including merger and acquisition advice, recapitalization, and organizational restructuring. Prior to venturing out on his own, Andy was the Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing with The Private Bank at Bank of America. His responsibilities have included developing and implementing corporate business strategy, information systems, compensation programs, and risk management policies. In his 18 year financial services career he has also been a registered investment consultant, commercial lender, and branch manager.

Active in his community, he serves on several boards and is involved with the Chamber of Commerce, Boy Scouts of America, Family Service Agency, Civic Light Opera, Music Academy of the West, Arthritis Foundation, and the United Way. Andy has a BA in business management from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
 

Steve Worzman - Executive Director, Central Coast Venture Forum

Steve WorzmanFor the past 15 years, Steven Worzman has been actively assisting new businesses in the areas of venture capital, business planning, cash flow management, growth financing, capital restructuring, and computer systems. Most recently he organized the Central Coast Venture Forum 2000, an annual conference for emerging-growth companies and venture capital investors. Prior to this Steve established and managed Radius Capital, LLC with the principle focus of structuring financing alternatives for qualified U.S. public companies via SEC Reg. S and Reg. D private placements. He was also Vice President, Senior Investment Officer of Bartlett, Schlumberger and Company, Inc., a private venture capital investment company of the Schlumberger family, based in New York City and Santa Barbara. Additionally, he was involved with EAB Venture, Inc., a venture capital subsidiary of European American Bank in New York City and served as the Chief Financial Officer for a start-up airline, Jazz Air, Inc.

In his early career, Steve was a management consultant in data processing for Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co., a consulting chemical engineer for Gordian Associates, Inc. (a subsidiary of Pullman-Kellogg, Inc.), and a process engineer for E.I. DuPont de Nemours and Company in both the Textile Fibers and Photo Products Divisions. Steve earned his MBA from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. While at Wharton he attended the Moore School of Electrical Engineering for course work in the computer science masters program. He received a BS in Chemical Engineering from the Carnegie Institute of Technology, Carnegie-Mellon University. As part of his continuing education, he recently graduated from The John E. Anderson Graduate School of Management, UCLA, Merger and Acquisitions Program in March 1999 and has completed coursework in Advanced Taxation (corporate, partnership, estates & trusts), Individual Income Taxation, and E-Commerce at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
