Dennis Cagan has been in the high technology industry as an active and successful entrepreneur since 1967, having founded or co-founded eighteen different companies. Dennis has been an investor, professional board member (43 boards) and consultant for since 1982. He is the founder, Chairman and CEO of the Santa Barbara Technology Group, LLC. Dennis is a nationally recognized authority on information technology, including: Internet, software, hardware, and communications, in the disciplines of strategy, sales, marketing, services, and distribution channels. He has authored dozens of articles and has spoken widely at industry conferences and to paying corporate audiences such as Microsoft.
Santa Barbara Technology Group, LLC is inactive at this time, but was previously a private investment and consulting firm engaged primarily in working with, and investing in early-stage technology companies. From 2000 to 2006 the firm became an important connection for any high-tech start-up on the California Central Coast. They provided world-class management assistance, strategic guidance, and valuable connections for entrepreneurs. They provided young companies access to financing and operational and technological infrastructure.
As the founder, Chairman and CEO of SBTG, Dennis continues to oversee all activities including monitoring portfolio investments, consulting to early-stage technology companies, and selecting new investments, contributing his experience, vision and insights to the management teams of all portfolio companies. He is a nationally recognized authority on software, hardware, communications, and internet technology in the disciplines of strategy, sales, marketing, services, and distribution channels. He has long been regarded as an active entrepreneur within the industry.
In 1979 Dennis was the keynote speaker at the first COMDEX Show, in Las Vegas. Since 1981 Dennis has served as a management consultant. Over the past nine years he has focused entirely on Internet, software and services. The companies he has been on the Board and very involved with have been some of Santa Barbara’s most successful technology enterprises including Wavefront Technologies (then Alias/Wavefront - NASDAQ, acquired by Silicon Graphics), Software.com (NASDAQ, merged with Phone.com, now OpenWave: OPWV), Somera Communications (SMRA, founding investor only), Supply Solution,Commission Junction (acquired by VLCK),Bargain Network (acquired by VTRU), InQ, InTouch Technologies, Blue Casa Communications, Nutricate, Truston Corp. and Noza, LLC.
Dennis has been on the board of a number of other public technology companies including The David Jamison Carlyle Corp. (he was the founder), ISOCOR (NASDAQ, acquired by Critical Path: CPTH), MessageMedia, Inc. (NASDAQ, acquired by DoubleClick: DCLK, he was the interim CEO), Great Bear Technologies (NASDAQ), StarPress (NASDAQ) and Sanctuary Woods Multimedia (NASDAQ).
Dennis is currently serving on Boards of Directors of Acorn Technologies, Inc (co-founder and former Chairman), Pacific Palisades; Nutricate Corporation (former Chairman), Santa Barbara; TrustOn Corp. (Chairman), Santa Barbara; NOZA, LLC(former Chairman); (Chairman) Goleta, CA. He is a member of UCSB's Lancaster Society, Santa Barbara County's United Way CEO Club, and belongs to United Way’s Alexis de Tocqueville Society (Membres de la Societe).
Dennis, born in 1945, is a native Californian, and attended the University of California at Los Angeles where he majored in economics. He has an honorable discharge from the USMC.
