Santa Barbara, Calif., Nov. 14, 2000 -- Dennis Cagan, Chairman and CEO of Santa Barbara Technology Incubator (SBTi), will serve as a distinguished guest on UCSB’s “Panel on Creativity” on November 20th. Sponsored by the Interdisciplinary Humanities Center and the College of Letters and Science at the University of California, Santa Barbara, the event will feature successful artists, composers, writers, publishers, producers, and entrepreneurs discussing their professional experience with students who aspire to establish careers in creative fields. “I’m honored to have been selected as a guest on UCSB’s Panel on Creativity,” said Cagan. “I appreciate the fact that creativity in business and technology is finally being recognized alongside other creative fields. I hope that my experience as both an entrepreneur and a supporter of the arts will allow me to offer useful advice to students who are considering careers in the arts.” Cagan has been an active entrepreneur in the high technology industry for over 33 years and is a nationally recognized authority on software, hardware, and communications businesses. He has been involved with many of Santa Barbara’s most successful technology enterprises, including Alias/Wavefront, Software.com, Commission Junction, and SupplySolution. To be moderated by award-winning composer Jeff Barry, the invitation-only Panel on Creativity will be held exclusively for a hand-picked group of UCSB undergraduate students. The goal of this educational event is to give young people the rare opportunity of learning firsthand from seasoned professionals in the arts and related fields. In addition to Cagan, the guest panelists will include Bob Fead, music publisher with Burt Bacharach Music; TV executive Gary Lieberthal; the painter Rafael Perea de la Cabada; architect Barry Berkus; and Robert and Prudence Sternin, TV writers and producers. Barry, a member of the Songwriter Hall of Fame, has received the National Academy of Songwriters Lifetime Achievement Award and is a two-time winner of the Record of the Year award for the Record Industry Association of America. A songwriter and a record producer, he has written many No. 1 hits on the Billboard charts. About UCSB’s Interdisciplinary Humanities Center (www.ihc.ucsb.edu) The Interdisciplinary Humanities Center (IHC) was founded in December of 1987 to implement the Humanities Initiative begun by the President of the University of California. Out of the conviction that research and teaching in the Humanities are becoming perilously specialized, the IHC regards its principal mission as encouraging interdisciplinary scholarship and instruction. It does this by supporting research projects, team-taught courses, lectures, seminars, and conferences. By hosting a wide array of interdisciplinary programs and activities -- an increasing number of which take place in Santa Barbara -- the IHC also serves as a vital link between the campus and the community. In addition, the IHC seeks to broaden the traditional definition of humanistic endeavors by sponsoring activities in the performing and visual arts.
