Santa Barbara Technology Incubator (“SBTi”), a dynamic environment for nurturing and successfully propelling high-technology start-ups to tier-one venture financing, today announced the selection of its management team. Team members include Jason Spievak, Ron Macleod, Barbara Whatley, Benn Schrieber, Kevin Mills, Christina Walman, Karen Nilsen, Maggie Lang and Founder, Chairman and CEO Dennis Cagan. “I believe these folks constitute the best and most well-rounded start-up team ever assembled in Santa Barbara,” said Dennis Cagan. “It would normally be impossible for any single, early stage company to assemble the kind of management resources and expertise that SBTi will provide to our portfolio companies.” Ron Macleod has been active in the investment community for over 20 years. Before joining SBTi, he was Managing Director of Capital Markets, Global Sales & Investment Banking for the NASDAQ stock market. He has long been regarded as an active entrepreneur within the financial community and is an internationally recognized advisor to emerging companies in the areas of investor relations, capital markets, corporate governance and corporate communications strategies. He was a Partner of the Carson Group, a leading provider of institutional shareholder intelligence to the largest corporations in the world. Prior positions include Vice President, Georgeson & Company (the nations largest full service proxy solicitation and investor relations consulting firm), Founder - Beach Capital Group (Consulting firm specializing in research, communications and market development for growth companies and financial advisory firms), Executive Director - Research Services LTD (Niche financial marketing and publishing firm, specializing in the marketing of capital markets products to the investment community) and Vice President - Drexel Burnham Lambert (Full Service securities brokerage firm, specializing in high-yield corporate debt). Ron attended the University of California, Los Angeles and holds NASD License Series 7 and 63. He has been a member of National Investor Relations Institute (NIRI) for over 18 years and a member of New York Society of Security Analysts (NYSSA) for 9 years. Ron is also a Capital Markets consultant and guest lecturer at The Anderson School, UCLA Entrepreneurial School. Jason Spievak a Vice President of Technology Mergers and Acquisitions at Broadview Associates. At Broadview, he specialized in eCommerce software and services, network infrastructure and consumer Web services transactions. Before joining Broadview, Jason was a product manager for Netopia, a developer of Internet/Intranet products and was a product manager for Nextel Communications' wireless data division. Jason earned his MBA from the JL Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University, his BA from the University of California, Santa Barbara and holds NASD License Series 7 and 63. Barbara Whatley most recently was Chief Financial Officer of SupplySolution, Inc., a Santa Barbara headquartered application service provider targeting the automotive industry. As the fifth employee there, she helped launch the company from its very early stages through their first round of venture capital financing. Barbara’s previous experience includes serving ten years in various financial capacities for publicly held software developer QAD, Inc. where was CFO and Vice President. Prior to joining QAD in 1988, Barbara was Director of SEC and Tax Accounting at Republic Indemnity Company of America, Assistant Controller at Wrather Corporation and worked as an audit professional at Arthur Andersen & Company. Benn Schreiber was Vice President of Engineering at PulsePoint Communications, acquired by Unisys in August 1999. Before that, Benn was Director of Windows NT systems Software for Digital Equipment Corporation, where he worked side-by-side with Microsoft. He proposed and built DEC's Windows NT/Alpha software structure and designed and constructed Digital’s DEC Notes computer-based conferencing product, one of the industry’s first client/server groupware products. Kevin has been an international management consultant, most recently focused on Internet strategies, corporate operations, and business development. Prior to joining SBTi, Kevin was Vice-President of Consulting Operations at the Simms Group, Inc., a Santa Barbara-based consulting company. Before Simms Group, Kevin was a lead manager at Deloitte & Touche Consulting Group. Prior to that, he was a product manager at Sperry Topsider, Inc. Kevin earned his MBA from Harvard University Graduate School of Business. Christina is also currently the Associate Director for the Center for Entrepreneurship and Engineering Management at the University of California Santa Barbara. Prior to this and her SBTi postion, Christina was Director of Development for the College of Engineering at the University of California Santa Barbara. She also served as Development Officer and Marketing Coordinator for the United Way, as well as Public Relations Manager for SCVLink, a start-up online community resource company. Karen Nilsen was previously Web Marketing Manager for Metacreations where she was responsible for initiating website traffic building strategies, Internet advertising campaigns and Online Affiliate Marketing Programs. Before this Karen was the Marketing and Sales Manager for Strategic Research Corporation and the Founder of several other Santa Barbara based companies including Santa Barbara Marketing & Events and SB Web Marketing. Maggie Lang has worked in the creative fields of art, design and publishing, in New York and most recently as Producer and Studio Manager for local start-up graphics studio, VIVA DESIGN. As the founder, Chairman and CEO of SBTi, Dennis Cagan oversees all incubator activities, contributing his experience, vision and insights to the management teams of all incubated start-ups. Dennis has been an active and successful entrepreneur in the computer-based high technology industry for over 33 years. He is a nationally recognized authority on software, hardware, and communications, in the disciplines of strategy, sales, marketing, services, and distribution channels. He has long been regarded as an active entrepreneur within the industry. In 1979 Dennis was the keynote speaker at the first COMDEX Show, in Las Vegas. Since 1981 Dennis has served as a management consultant. Over the past five years he has shifted his focus entirely to Internet based software and services. The companies he has been involved with have been some of Santa Barbara’s most successful technology enterprises including Wavefront Technologies (NASDAQ, acquired by SGI), Software.com (NASDAQ: SWCM), Commission Junction, and SupplySolution.
