30 Years and 30 Boards: Some Lessons Learned

Santa Barbara Technology Incubator, Chairman and CEO, Educates Boards of Directors

Dennis Cagan, Chairman and CEO of Santa Barbara Technology Incubator (SBTi) will provide the kickoff presentation for the UCLA Anderson’s School’s Director Training Program. This prestigious event draws 200 directors per year. It provides two days of intensive education for directors and officers of pre-public and newly public companies. Cagan will share his stories from his thirty-three years of experience in the high-tech arena as an entrepreneur, a seasoned executive, an investor, a professional director and a member of over 30 public and private boards.

"My first board membership position was in 1968,” explains Cagan. “Having sat on over thirty boards has given me a real insight into human nature. It has also given me an appreciation for the multitude of often conflicting perspectives on any given fact and has shown me the value of a good sense of humor."

Now Dennis is using his insight and knowledge to grow high-technology ventures in Santa Barbara. As founder, Chairman and CEO of Santa Barbara Technology Incubator, Dennis will be guiding up to ten start-ups at any one time. Having studied start-up success for the past thirty years has enabled Cagan to build a unique, higher value high-technology incubator. SBTi provides new companies with proven elements that lead to success. Their rigorous process consists of a delicate balance of strategy, operations, market potential and individualized hands on company involvement.

"If key leaders and a valid idea are not part of the deal, then neither is SBTi," says Cagan.
